Shandee Blackburn case

QCCL President Michael Cope said today, “The QCCL has been watching the developments in the case of Shandee Blackburn with increasing concern.”

The investigation by the journalist Hedley Thomas has produced the opinion of Dr Kristy Wright that the Queensland government’s forensic lab has been making significant errors over a long period of time in the analysis of DNA samples.

“The QCCL is not aware of the background of Dr Wright and therefore is in no position to assess her level of expertise. However, it is our opinion that the material produced by Mr Thomas, including Dr Wright’s opinion raises significant concerns.”

“It is the QCCL’s view that the materials produced by Mr Thomas are sufficient to justify the Queensland government appointing an independent expert to conduct an inquiry into the allegations made by Dr Wright in order to ensure that public confidence in the administration of justice in the State is maintained.”

In our view, given the very small forensic science community in this country, that expert should be sourced from overseas.
